Research into the excavations of the burial vaults at Christ Church, Spitalfields, has proved to be a rich source of inspiration. Gail is currently investigating the hidden knowledge embedded in the codes used to record the lives and deaths of the interred. These codes are being used to direct her contemporary lacemaking practice.

Codes can be used to simplify complex subjects and to convey information. They can be subtle and evolving, as in personal codes of conduct, or straight forward security devices such as alarm codes.

The style of dress, choice of reading matter and mode of transport used all give coded clues to a person’s identity. We all have personal codes that allow us to access data or financial details but hide them from others. With identity theft becoming an increasing problem the encryption of personal details is seen as an integral part of everyday life.
